Breastfeeding is not just a personal choice—it is a public health imperative.

Breastfeeding is more than just nourishment, it's a bond, right and a powerful foundation for a healthy start in life. It is a pillar of sustainability. According to the world health organization (WHO), breast milk is the ideal food for infants. It is safe, clean, and contains antibodies which helps protect children from many common childhood illnesses.

Every year, from August 1st to 7th, the world comes together to mark World Breastfeeding Week (WBW)—a global campaign that raises awareness and galvanizes action around the importance of breastfeeding. Celebrated in over 120 countries, WBW is spearheaded by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, and other stakeholders.

Each year, the campaign adopts a unique theme to reflect current issues affecting maternal and infant health. This year’s theme, “Prioritize Breastfeeding: Create a Sustainable Support System,” underscores the need for a collective, sustained effort to address the barriers that prevent many mothers from breastfeeding optimally.

Breastfeeding being one of the most effective ways to give children healthy start ,by strengthening immunity and protecting both infants and mothers from diseases, mothers cannot do it alone. There must be a sustainable support system through quality health services, family-friendly workplace policies and stronger legal protection against unethical marketing of breast milk substitutes.

" We owe it to babies,  the future generation of citizens and to ourselves to ensure that they have the best start in life through exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months and continued breastfeeding up to 2 years," said United Nations children's Fund ( UNICEF) Representative, Sandra Lattouf. "The benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any perceived negatives by a long mile. We need to ensure that every mother, her family and the child are supported throughout the breastfeeding journey with the knowledge, resources and  encouragement they need. A healthy and thriving child is an asset for the family and the nation." She added.

This day calls on government, health institutions, employers and communities to step up and support breastfeeding parents especially those in formal and informal employment. This can be achieved by creating more baby-friendly workplaces and policies like paid maternity leave, flexible working hours and public education.

World breastfeeding week is more than a celebration , it's a powerful reminder of the role we all play in supporting mothers and nurturing future generations. By creating a breastfeeding - friendly environment at home, in work places and within our communities, we invest in healthier children, empowered women and a stronger society. Supporting breastfeeding is not just mother's responsibility, it's everyone's.
